converged at Flinders University in Adelaide for the annual Students
of Sustainability Conference (SOS). SOS is the largest grassroots,
student focused environmental conference in Australia. Community
groups, environmental campaigners and students came together for a
week of workshops, forums, networking and lotsa hot cups o' Chai.
This year campaigners from the Irati Wanti - the poison leave it,
media and campaign office for the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta,
participated in the conference, initiating forums and film screenings
aimed at sharing information about and raising awareness of the
proposed nuclear waste dump in the desert region of South Australia.
Unexpectedly the starting day of SOS coincided with the Federal
Government's application of their Compulsory Land Acquisition
powers to legally acquire Arcoona Station, the final site selected
for the waste dump. This move is the Federal Government's most
recent in a series of conniving maneuvers undertaken to undermine the
wishes of the majority of South Australians and push the dump ahead.
In response, students took action; protesting at the office of
Senator Nick Minchin, a key player in supporting the waste dump's
progression. The overwhelming police presence inhibited direct
contact with Senator Minchin however staff of the Commonwealth Bank
Building (100 King William St, Adelaide) were presented with Irati
Wanti postcards and a large nuclear drum. This action was inspired by
the Kungka Tjuta and their strong opposition to the dumping of
radioactive waste in their homelands and has amplified the awareness
of the broader community in an obvious display of nation wide support
for their campaign.
