hey,
this is email below is forwarded from the imc-pasifika-setup list. for more
on imc-pasifika: https://docs.indymedia.org/view/Local/ImcPasifika
my own views: Sina (below) and kimk (in another email) have said it well. an
oceania imc or pasifika imc would be fantastic! however, i'd be reluctant to
call it that if it is the same crew, predominately white male, from big
cities in 1st world countries (Australia and New Zealand) are behind such a
project. i think imc aotearoa has been doing ok-ish over the last year with
trying to focus more on the Pacific struggles (Tonga, West Papua, East
Timor, Solomons), indigenous struggles and workers struggles here (who are
fought by low-paid workers, predominantly Maori and Pacific Islanders).
Still, it's been 'us' writing about 'them'.
maybe, with a lot of organising and networking, we can get to this:
"Indymedia is an opportunity for the grassroots to speak and be heard. This
is a people driven opportunity to report and tell the world of your life and
struggles and resistance. It is our goal to further the self-determination
of people unheard and under-represented in media production and content. We
seek to bring voice to illuminate and analyze local and global issues that
impact ecosystems, communities and individuals. We should have no doubt that
the Pacific and all its natural resources will be up for exploitation big
time, no matter the impacts on lands, peoples and culture. Who else
understands our stories and struggles but us?" (written by Sina).
lets keep talking ;)

I for one am sad to see Melbourne indy go. I would however strongly support
a Oceania (Te Moana Nui a Kiwa) indymedia . With a sordid colonial
past, present and future, I think that the time is ripe to put Pacific
issues at the forefront more importantly considering how the press is
seriously curtailed in the Pacific a voice for the grass roots in the
Pacific is crucial at a time when we are fight US hegemony & neo liberalism
in the Pacific.
Also its good that settlers in OZ & NZ firmly place them selves in their
Geography as well. My only proviso would be more Indigenous involvement in
both countries (OZ & NZ)
If it can help to organise regionally and give a more prominent voice to
Oceania, then go for it. Happy to help.
Noho ora mai
