I replied to an initial email from Davey Heller on 14 June, ccing this
list, but for some reason the email never got posted to the list. Here
is that response I sent to Davey.
I think we need to work out a timetable for:
1. a collective meeting
2. an open meeting of anyone interested in the future of Melb Indymedia.
The collective meeting would work out some options re software,
editorial, how much commitment.
The open meeting would elaborate on the above, hopefully bring new
involvement, and assess whether we have the resources and commitment to
sustain the website.
I think And is right, we need a fuller, more accurate statement on the
website why we suspending publishing - perhaps rediting and developing
my email to imc-communication could form the basis for this.
It has been two weeks now, and I think we should be acting now while MIM
still has readers to assess the situation.

Thanks for the feedback Davey.
I think a meeting will be called re Melbourne Indymedia, although no
details have been formulated yet. Might be in about a months time. We
will advertise it on the site and use our email list, and perhaps
circulate details through other lists such as the Friends of the Earth
enews when details are known.
Hopefully a meeting will stimulate others to become involved.
Certainly I would think of it as a new collective. I would like to
propose to that new collective a tighter editorial policy and increased
moderation of posts abusing the policy. To assist this I also think the
software the site uses needs to be upgraded.
A Drupal site was in development which had authenticated userids (which
should help to eliminate posters that breach ed[pol) and I have asked
for a status report from the developer to see how much more work is
required and what features need to be added. We could reopen using the
present site but it would require more people to become active in
moderating the site.
Most of the collective work is done online via email and irc chat, so it
is not essential to attend meetings as a member of the collective. That
said, face to face contact at least at an initial meeting would be good
before joining the collective.
If you were interested in becoming an admin and helping research/write
features, or even just to help moderate the newswires, I would be
pleased to welcome you.
There are several voting or rating systems that could be employed in a
new site. The only down side is that unless you have a large readership
they can be susceptible to manipulation.
In terms of google, the editorial hoops are not that great, and it
provides a carrot for contributors as their stories get indexed and do
attract additional readers.
once again, thanks for your journalistic contributions over the years
and watch out for that meeting announcement.
in solidarity
