Many survivors have had to carry the added burden of being sent to wars that were fought for short term political and ideological expediency, not the defence of Australia...." said Joseph Toscano. Why Workers Need to Oppose Militarism From changeling_au_2004 at yahoo.com.au Mon Apr 23 22:05:07 2007 From: changeling_au_2004 at yahoo.com.au (Nigel W) Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2007 08:05:07 +1000 (EST) Subject: [Imc-melbourne-eds] Proposed: Doctors launch Campaign Against Nuclear Weapons In-Reply-To: <200704231143.l3NBhgWK008763@apollo.linuxengine.net> Message-ID: <116168.70460.qm@web56609.mail.re3.yahoo.com> I should have time to return to my MIM duties soon. While monitoring the news wire, I'll keep watch for stories worth turning into features - a difficult task considering so much "activism" these days is Ruling Elite sponsored and thus counterproductive or *at least* questionable. Looking at this event ( ) I see Gareth Evans - foreign minister when Australia helped destroy Iraq and supporter of the genocidal Indonesian occupation of East Timor - has taken some time out from his arch-criminal buddies at the International Crisis Group ( ) to say a few words about nuclear weapons. And former Prime Sinister Malcolm Fraser has managed to pluck himself away from his job of being a criminal adviser to criminals ( ), so he can presumably offer us some advice on what to do if a 1 Megaton bomb hits Melbourne. Fortunately, there is real activism going on out there. There are 2 main reasons I can currently think of for why it is so under-reported. 1) It is often highly effective, thus it is essential for the Ruling Elite to keep such stories suppressed. I think one of our main missions for the near future should be to seek out such activists and actively encourage them to publicise their activities on MIM. 2) The "activist media" is being flooded with numerous red herrings and decoys and the promotion of various psuedo-activist modalities. One of the latest incarnations of this sort of thing is the proliferation of various "petition" websites set up by various elitists. GetUp, AVAAZ, Moveon.org and http://ceasefirecampaign.org/ are the most prominent examples. All of them are articulating Ruling Elite policy by putting a "progressive" and "The people are demanding it" spin on whatever topic they're making an issue of. But that's a topic for another day....such as when I get around to asking what an AVAAZ "petition" on Paul Wolfowitz - and a hilarious one at that - has to do with David Hicks. All the best, Nigel ps: We should have a meeting in the near future to get the MIM energy thing happening again. takver wrote: A quick one...
