The Nyungah people of Western Australia, in a landmark decision by Justice Wilcox of the Federal Court, were granted Native Title to 6000 square kilometres including Perth City. The decision makes them the first Aboriginal group to successfully claim Native Title over a capital city. Supporters say the decision is a long overdue recognition of the Nyungah people's identity. The decision does not affect freehold or leasehold land or people's backyards. On September 29 500 Nyungah and supporters rallied on the steps of WA parliament house.

When Corporations Spy on Activists...
Amcor and elements of the CFMEU set up and funded an 'A-team' to spy on
environmental activists and Green groups during the 1990s, according to
a recent Four Corners program. In May/June 2001 it was discovered
that a member of the Barricade anarchist bookshop collective was a spy
"in the employ of a number of corporations (in particular, those in the
mining and timber industries) seeking to obtain otherwise ?confidential?
information on individuals and groups in the environmental movement." according
to @ndy from Barricade Books. The person also infiltrated 3CR,
Friends of the Earth and Nuclear Free Australia.
The environmental movement poses a big challenge for big business engaged in anti-environmentalism, some of whom are willing to use spying (like Amcor) or expensive legal challenges (like Gunns) to undermine environmental grassroots campaigns. @ndy said "Perhaps we should take comfort in the fact that state and corporate authorities should feel so threatened by our attempts to stop their ?progress? ? a ?progress? which strips us of our humanity at the same time as it plunders our communities and our Earth ? to resort to such measures."

Environmental activists in Tasmania have condemned cable logging of the
ancient, leatherwood rich forest in the Arve Valley. Bee keepers are
particularly concerned for the impact on production of leatherwood

operation, large leatherwoods in reserve areas were found knocked over
by large eucalypts. Work was halted for a short time, whilst activists

Long term detainees Walk Free from Immigration Detention
Three detainees recently walked free from immigration detention. All
came out of psychiatric hospitals after years in detention. The longest
was 6 years. "Six long hard years of soul destroying, spirit breaking
detention for no moral reason. One permanent protection visa and two
temporary visas in the Vanstone lottery." said Pamela Curr of the
Melbourne Asylum Seekers Resource Centre.
A new report by the Edmund Rice Centre (ERC) accuses the Government of
deporting asylum seekers to danger. According to the report, 39 of the
41 asylum seekers interviewed in 2006 by the Centre were deported to
danger. "Fundamental reform is needed if we are to honour human rights
obligations and the values they enshrine. Those who are in danger have
compelling cases for their claims to be reassessed.? said Edmund Rice
Centre (ERC) director Phil Glendenning.
