Welfare Measures A kick in the Face to the Disabled...
The SUWA (Squatters and Unwaged Airwaves) program on Community Radio
3CR has reported on the changes to welfare that will adversely impact
disabled and unemployed people. "In the midst of all the attention
around industrial relations reform in recent months a key plank of the
government?s plan to make the rich even richer has been largely
ignored." said the statement
from SUWA. The program reported on changes that will affect all
new applicants for the Disability Support Pension, Sole parents
claimants, and a case of bureacratic bungling adversely affecting an
80 year old pensioner.

Geelong Unionists adopt Peoples Charter
People in Geelong have adopted a 10 point charter
of Peoples' Demands which argues for "claiming back our rights" by
reinstituting national awards and calling for the abolition of AWAs
. Geelong Trades
Hall Council adopted the charter on 27 June, and it was endorsed
by the Geelong Industrial Relations protest rally on June 28.
The charter said "Over the past 10 years the Howard Government has
systematically destroyed our Conciliation and Arbitration system, and
along with it, our awards, entitlements and rights in the workplace.
We have allowed them to turn back the clock more than 150 years. Our
rights as workers are back where they were in the early 1800?s - the
only thing now missing is a Master -

G20 meeting in Melbourne in November
The 2006 G20 meeting of finance ministers, reserve bank governors and
heads of the World Bank
and International Monetary Fund (IMF) will take place in Melbourne
on November 18-19 this year. This will be the most significant gathering
in Melbourne of people responsible for pushing corporate-led
globalisation, neoliberalism and capitalism since the World
Economic Forum in 2000. [Background]
The campaign against the G20 was launched on 4th July. You can join an email
list to find out about "activities, events, forums, workshops and
ways of becoming involved in organising protest activities (and
promoting alternatives!) in the build-up to the 2006 G20 meeting."

Ireland: Jury declares Anti-War activists Not Guilty
Ciaron O'Reilly and the four other Pitstop Ploughshares have been acquitted
by a jury in Ireland of the charges against them for putting a US
war plane out of action in 2003. The jury agreed with their defence that
they had a lawful excuse to damage the plane in order to stop it from
being part of a system that was directly involved in killing civilians
in Iraq.
A statement from the
Pitstop Ploughshares after the trial said "The decision of this jury
should be a message to London, Washington DC and the Dail that Ireland
wants no part in waging war on the people of Iraq. Refuelling of US
warplanes at Shannon Airport should cease immediately."

Protests Against Israeli Aggression
Adapted from www.indymedia.org
Tens of thousands throughout the world took to the street on July 22nd,
to protest against the ongoing Israeli war on
Lebanon and Palestine. Israeli air forces have destroyed countless
civilian buildings and means of transportation in operations that have
killed more than 400 people, mostly civilians, and wrecked havoc on
Lebanese cities, harbours, airports and other infrastructure, leading to
the displacement of more than half a million people. The International
Day of Action had been called by various anti-war and solidarity
campaigns.
In Australia, thousands of people turned out at rallies in Sydney, Melbourne
and Adelaide, while a
gathering in Perth was cancelled by the police.
Events: protest
on 30 July and forum
event on 2 August.

Hi All,
the problem with the events which this feature is highlighting is that they are primarily anti-Israeli rather than pro-Arab. As someone who was once vehemently anti-Zionist, I can say now without equivocation that anti-Zionism is not a progressive force (except perhaps in certain limited contexts) and that it represents a Nazi-esque infection of the so-called "left", regardless of the good intentions of some of its advocates.
What has this got to do with the current war in Lebanon? A lot. No one seemed too concerned about the well being of the Lebanese before the Israeli invasion, and the only concern now seems to be for those Lebanese killed by Israeli weapons. There is no discussion about the fact that Hezbollah are a totally antisemitic organisation which is imposing sharia law on Lebanese civilians and in fact is a major part of the Lebanese government - a government which Bush is championing. There is no discussion about the fact that whenever Israel withdraws from anywhere, terrorist organisations which *claim* to represent Arabs and/or Muslims and which have documented links with Western intelligence agencies take advantage of this and use it as an opportunity to launch attacks against Israeli civilians. Then when Israel reacts militarily - *as any state would* - all of a sudden there's a veritable gush of moralistic posturing about the *symptoms of the situation*, but virtually
no analysis of *the situation itself* .
The current war in Lebanon - in Realpolitik speak - is the latest in a complex series of Geopolitical chess moves. All of this is beyond the scope of a simple email, so for the benefit of those of you who take an interest in the Middle East, I provide the following links. You will notice that these articles are thoroughly sourced and footnoted:
"Is the US an ally of Israel? A chronological look at the evidence" -
This is an online book which totally destroys a myth which pro-Israel and anti-Israel people both agree on - the myth that the US is an ally of Israel. It's huge, so I recommend scrolling down a bit and clicking on the year of interest.
"Understanding the Palestinian Movement" -
First of a 4-part series which looks at the history of antisemitism in the ME, starting from the pre-Zionist period and detailing the British/Nazi/US creation and sponsorship of a "Palestinian movement" for the purposes of fostering antisemitism. The organisations which claim to represent Palestinian Arabs kill and torture more Palestinians than Israel. Why doesn't the "left" discuss this anymore? Why has virtually no "leftist" heard of Hajj Amin al Husseini - the senior Nazi (and mentor of Yasser Arafat) who founded the Arab Higher Committee? Leftists back in 1948 knew exactly who this guy was - see newspaper clippings at and
"The CIA protected Adolf Eichmann, architect of the Holocaust
Has the US ruling elite been pushing a pro-Nazi policy?" -
"How the mainstream Jewish leadership failed the Jewish people in World War II" -
Documents how certain "Jewish leaders" actively sabotaged attempts by working class Jews (and others) to rescue European Jews from the Nazi death machine.
"How mainstream Diaspora Jewish leaders are failing the Jewish people today" -
The comments by Edgar Bronfman (World Jewish Congress) and Abe Foxman (Anti-Defamation league) have to be read to be believed.
"Reply to Mearsheimer & Walt's "The Israel Lobby" " -
Mearsheimer & Walt produced their report a few months ago which claimed that the "Jewish lobby" were influencing US foreign policy to the detriment of the US. This article tears this absurd notion apart.
"The modern "Protocols of Zion"
How the mass media now promotes the same lies that caused the death of more than 5 million Jews in WWII" -
If the notion that "Jews control the US" sounds familiar, then that's because it should. First of a 7 part series which also documents how the CIA is attacking Israel and why.
The are more articles from HIR available at
"Though well known as a terrorist since 1996, one month before 9/11 President George W. Bush thanked Sami Al-Arian's family for a book they sent him and expressed "regret" about how their son was treated by the Secret Service." -
Documents the links between the Bush Admin and operatives working on behalf of such lovely outfits as Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad. There's more on this sort of collaboration - particularly regarding Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi - at
There are plenty more links I could provide, however I'll finish off with just a couple of links which provide numerous articles which may come as a shock to those who are unaware that the US and the Iranian theocrats have been covertly collaborating since the Ayatollah Khomeini was manipulated into power in the late 1970s - and
All of the above shows very clearly that the Arab-Israeli dispute is far more complicated than it may appear, and that looking and moralising only about the symptoms (which include the current war in Lebanon) is foolish at best.
If we do decide to put up this feature, then I must insist that it include a link to which is the first of a series of articles which analyses the current war in Lebanon.
All the best,
Nigel

to protest against the ongoing

Lebanese cities, harbours, airports and other infrastructure, leading to
the displacement of more than half a million people. The
