Tens of thousands throughout the world took to the street on July 22nd, to protest against the ongoing Israeli war on Lebanon and Palestine. Israeli air forces have destroyed countless civilian buildings and means of transportation in operations that have killed more than 400 people, mostly civilians, and wrecked havoc on Lebanese cities, harbours, airports and other infrastructure, leading to the displacement of more than half a million people. The International Day of Action had been called by various anti-war and solidarity campaigns.

In Australia, thousands of people turned out at rallies in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide, while a gathering in Perth was cancelled by the police.

Events: protest on 30 July and forum event on 2 August.

As someone who was once vehemently anti-Zionist, I can say now without equivocation that anti-Zionism is not a progressive force (except perhaps in certain limited contexts) and that it represents a Nazi-esque infection of the so-called "left", regardless of the good intentions of some of its advocates. What has this got to do with the current war in Lebanon? A lot. No one seemed too concerned about the well being of the Lebanese before the Israeli invasion, and the only concern now seems to be for those Lebanese killed by Israeli weapons. There is no discussion about the fact that Hezbollah are a totally antisemitic organisation which is imposing sharia law on Lebanese civilians and in fact is a major part of the Lebanese government - a government which Bush is championing. There is no discussion about the fact that whenever Israel withdraws from anywhere, terrorist organisations which *claim* to represent Arabs and/or Muslims and which have documented links with Western intelligence agencies take advantage of this and use it as an opportunity to launch attacks against Israeli civilians. Then when Israel reacts militarily - *as any state would* - all of a sudden there's a veritable gush of moralistic posturing about the *symptoms of the situation*, but virtually no analysis of *the situation itself* . The current war in Lebanon - in Realpolitik speak - is the latest in a complex series of Geopolitical chess moves. All of this is beyond the scope of a simple email, so for the benefit of those of you who take an interest in the Middle East, I provide the following links. You will notice that these articles are thoroughly sourced and footnoted: "Is the US an ally of Israel? A chronological look at the evidence" - This is an online book which totally destroys a myth which pro-Israel and anti-Israel people both agree on - the myth that the US is an ally of Israel. It's huge, so I recommend scrolling down a bit and clicking on the year of interest. "Understanding the Palestinian Movement" - First of a 4-part series which looks at the history of antisemitism in the ME, starting from the pre-Zionist period and detailing the British/Nazi/US creation and sponsorship of a "Palestinian movement" for the purposes of fostering antisemitism. The organisations which claim to represent Palestinian Arabs kill and torture more Palestinians than Israel. Why doesn't the "left" discuss this anymore? Why has virtually no "leftist" heard of Hajj Amin al Husseini - the senior Nazi (and mentor of Yasser Arafat) who founded the Arab Higher Committee? Leftists back in 1948 knew exactly who this guy was - see newspaper clippings at and "The CIA protected Adolf Eichmann, architect of the Holocaust Has the US ruling elite been pushing a pro-Nazi policy?" - "How the mainstream Jewish leadership failed the Jewish people in World War II" - Documents how certain "Jewish leaders" actively sabotaged attempts by working class Jews (and others) to rescue European Jews from the Nazi death machine. "How mainstream Diaspora Jewish leaders are failing the Jewish people today" - The comments by Edgar Bronfman (World Jewish Congress) and Abe Foxman (Anti-Defamation league) have to be read to be believed. "Reply to Mearsheimer & Walt's "The Israel Lobby" " - Mearsheimer & Walt produced their report a few months ago which claimed that the "Jewish lobby" were influencing US foreign policy to the detriment of the US. This article tears this absurd notion apart. "The modern "Protocols of Zion" How the mass media now promotes the same lies that caused the death of more than 5 million Jews in WWII" - If the notion that "Jews control the US" sounds familiar, then that's because it should. First of a 7 part series which also documents how the CIA is attacking Israel and why. The are more articles from HIR available at "Though well known as a terrorist since 1996, one month before 9/11 President George W. Bush thanked Sami Al-Arian's family for a book they sent him and expressed "regret" about how their son was treated by the Secret Service." - Documents the links between the Bush Admin and operatives working on behalf of such lovely outfits as Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad. There's more on this sort of collaboration - particularly regarding Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi - at There are plenty more links I could provide, however I'll finish off with just a couple of links which provide numerous articles which may come as a shock to those who are unaware that the US and the Iranian theocrats have been covertly collaborating since the Ayatollah Khomeini was manipulated into power in the late 1970s - and All of the above shows very clearly that the Arab-Israeli dispute is far more complicated than it may appear, and that looking and moralising only about the symptoms (which include the current war in Lebanon) is foolish at best. If we do decide to put up this feature, then I must insist that it include a link to which is the first of a series of articles which analyses the current war in Lebanon.
